Safety program includes coaching of rig hands Safety Vision
Union Drilling, Inc. has a very strong commitment toward safety for the employees. UDI is committed to provide the safest work environment possible free of any unsafe hazards or conditions. This commitment begins by management providing the necessary resources and support for the Safety program to be successful. UDI believes that all accidents can be prevented and a goal of 0 (zero) accidents can be attained with a very pro-active safety program approach. This goal will be achieved through continuous safety training, accident investigations, a thorough inspection program, safety meetings and discussions, and stressing the importance for employee involvement for a safe work culture. This commitment can be further exemplified by the involvement of Management (Corporate and Division), the Safety department, Tool Pushers and Drillers emphasizing to the employees the importance and commitment UDI places on safety.
Safety is defined as a freedom from danger, risk, or injury; the condition of being safe from undergoing or causing hurt, injury, or loss; a device designed to prevent inadvertent or hazardous operations. To meet the expectations of the definition, UDI has taken a very pro-active approach toward safety by implementing the following programs or procedures.
- Hiring the Safety personnel to conduct training, an ongoing Rig Inspection program, and be hands on by continuously doing on-site visits.
- Forming Safety Committees at the Corporate and Division levels and encouraging representation from employees from all levels.
- Providing a behavioral based safety program by purchasing and implementing the STOP Safety Program.
- Implementing and carrying out an active Drug Testing program to provide a safer workplace for all UDI employees.
- Creating a three tier Safety Incentive Program based on individual accomplishments and also encourages teamwork on a crew basis and a department basis.
The success these programs have produced can be measured by reviewing the following results. The entire Safety program began in 2000 when a Safety Director was hired and a program was put into place. Since that time more Departments and employees are receiving awards for safe work performance and no lost time accidents. The accident rates have continuously declined based on the number of accidents versus number of man-hours worked per year. More Rigs are receiving award recognition from IADC for working a complete year (365 Operating Days without a LTA) and also the annual UDI accident free award. Employee longevity is starting to increase where crews are starting to stay together and experience is providing for a safer work environment. The following shows the success achieved from the program:
